1st Mortimer Scouts news

After surviving such a long period of Lock Down  and isolation maintaining our meetings via Zoom (what would we have done with out it) we are back !!!

All our Beavers , Cubs and Scouts were so glad to get back to enjoying the great outdoors again with tracking in the woods , games on the field , fire lighting, wood cutting, learning to put up a tent, cooking a sausage sizzle and marsh mallows ( of course), building water rockets, hiking, map reading, cycling and pioneering

During the October Half Term our Scouts enjoyed a great camp on the Isle of Wight it was really good to get back to camping there is nothing better than enjoying hearty meals cooked over an open fire. The weather was kind to us and everyone enjoyed hiking out to the coast we even got time to relax on the beach.

Beavers and Cubs had a great time carving Pumpkins for Halloween with some really great and scary designs

Scouts Halloween

At long last we were able to Parade on Remembrance Sunday and for the first time Parade our new group's colours. For most of our Cubs and all of our Beavers this was their first parade and they did all look very smart and were a credit to our group and their families. We were also honoured to help run the Royal British Legion stall outside the Baobab.

As Christmas approached we held our Cubs annual Fun and Games Christmas Camp in our HQ we also welcomed some Cubs from Groups as far aways as Bristol and Warminster who came along to enjoy the fun culminating in a full Christmas dinner enjoyed by all.

Our Beavers then set about creating some lovely Christmas cards and the Cubs made String Snowmen out of balloons, string and PVA Glue. A bit messy but the end results were spectacular.

Our Scouts have been busy as well ,with thanks to Englefield Estate we spent several evening building Bivvis in the west end woods as well as running a Box challenge involving finding Boxes located in various locations then solving problems and riddles which provided a code to get into the box in order to get further instructions.

Scout cooking

More recently they have been doing some Pioneering and Oven building in preparation for a bake off competition. Always a challenge when you have no way of accurately governing the temperature in your oven !!

Coming up on March 26th is the Skip Johnson Memorial Hike competition  which has been delayed for several years due to the pandemic.

There is always something going on and lots of happy faces. Whilst our Beaver Colony and Cub Pack are quite full we do have spaces in our Scout Group

And lastly this year is our  112th Birthday  WOW !!
