There is a massive demand for allotments in Mortimer but none exist. There was a site in the village until the 1970's. Mortimer Green Group in partnership with Mortimer Stratfield Parish Council are seeking suitable land for allotments. It is not easy to identify possible sites so we need all the help we can get. If you know of some land or someone who may have an available patch or fields please let us know - claremark@supanet.com
There are two sites we are looking at to develop for growing vegetables
The first area is behind the Horse & Groom pub. This is a small patch of land but central in the village It is just the right size for a community garden. Many thanks to the publican for this kind offer.
This project is well underway. It will be the village community garden. There have been several working days preparing the plot. The garden can be used by any group or individual wishing to get involved. The vegetables we grow in the community garden will be shared amongst the growers, used in community gatherings and distributed to groups such as the lunch club and isolated households in the village. We hope the garden will become a place where anyone can visit, learn more about growing food, become inspired and to find tranquility.
Anyone interested in helping in this project is welcome to contact Mark Hillyer on 0118 9331924 or come to our regular planning meetings on the third Wednesday of each month 7.30 pm in the Horse & Groom. If you dislike meetings and would rather plant, weed and sow then we often meet at the garden on Saturday mornings.
As the garden develops we will post more photos and tell more stories. In the past few weeks we have been given a wooden greenhouse, prepared the ground for planting, put in potatoes, beans, celariac, courgettes, pumkins and strawberries.
Our other site is at Mortimer West End Chapel, Chapel Lane, Padworth Common RG7 4QE - the church has been very generous in offering us some of their land www.thechapel.org.uk
Views of the potential site at the Chapel
Lots of preparation needed but it has plenty of potential
