The Oaks Childcare Clubs CIC
The Oaks is a not-for-profit organisation (a Community Interest Company) providing wraparound and preschool care in Mortimer, Burghfield and Silchester. All of our clubs are a fun, safe place for children of different ages to play, relax and spend time together. The Oaks was started nearly 20 years ago in Mortimer and has evolved from one club run by volunteer parents to a Community Interest Company running 9 clubs in 3 villages with over 250 children being looked after by a friendly, professional, and caring team of around 35 staff.
In Mortimer we run Early Little Oaks breakfast club at the Mortimer Community Centre (7.30-9.00am), and then accompany the children safely to their classroom at Mortimer St John’s school. Our Little Oaks club provides after-school care on-site at Mortimer St John’s from the end of the school day until 6.00pm.
Down the hill at Mortimer St Mary’s, we run Early Big Oaks breakfast club (7.30-9.00am) and Big Oaks (3.30-6.30pm). Children are able to use the extensive school playing fields, astroturf area, and playground equipment for outdoor play, and indoor play extends from the Oaks building into the school hall and classrooms on some days when these are available.
Our staff are trained in ‘child-led play’, a method which develops children’s confidence and imagination as well as their friendships. We really get to know your child and love seeing them have fun. Often the biggest complaint we get from parents is that their child won’t come home because they’re having too much fun!

Together in Mission
Together in Mission (TiM) is a local charity – our activities are focussed on the communities in Burghfield Common, Mortimer, Sulhamstead, Ufton Nervet and the surrounding villages. Our aim is meet the needs of our communities by providing friendship and a meeting place in the community where all are welcome. We do this primarily through a befriending service, known as TiM Friends, and a community café, known as Café B. TiM also runs ad hoc projects to support the community.

Walking for Health
The walks take place every Tuesday and start from the community centre car park opposite the Horse & Groom PH. There are always three walks – at 09:45 a longer, faster paced, walk of around 5.25 miles that lasts from 1 hr 45 mins to 2 hrs; at 10:00 our regular, easier paced, walk of around 3.5 miles that lasts about 1hr 30 mins; and at 10:30 a shorter, gentler, walk taking an hour (particularly intended for those just starting out, or coming back from illness, etc). We always all meet together back at the Horse & Groom, at around 11:30 to 11:45, for coffee. All are very welcome – new walkers please turn up about 10 mins before the relevant walk and make yourself known to one of the walk leaders. All walks are free of charge. From Mid April to October walks also take place on Monday evenings
