Silver Sunday in Mortimer

Sixty Mortimer residents attended the first ever Silver Sunday event in the village on Sunday 5th October.  The initiative was created in 2012 by The Simon Milton Foundation in partnership with Westminster Councillors to celebrate, appreciate and acknowledge our older residents and their place in our communities.   This year there were events being held all over the country. In Mortimer it was organised jointly by Mortimer Age Concern, Mortimer Village Partnership, Able Active Friends and Woodley Age Concern and was held in the Methodist Hall.

Guests were entertained at the beautifully decorated tables (flowers courtesy of Judi Morris) with card tricks by a talented young magician Kye Harmsworth.  A hearty shepherd’s pie main course was donated by DeVere Venues Wokefield Park, a regular supporter of MVP and other community activities.  Home made apple crumble and trifle followed. Everyone was then entertained by the lively Sforzando! Sax sextet from our local band South Berkshire Concert Band with arrangements of Chicken Walk, The Entertainer, When I’m Sixty Four and the Lone Ranger; the last had everyone listening hard to recognise the 42 hidden tunes. Girls from the Anne Fraser School of Dance charmed everyone with their imaginative and graceful dancing. The afternoon was rounded off with a raffle.
